What Is Strategic Intelligence?

Traditionally, outside of a number of more sophisticated businesses in Anglophone countries, few other companies have made advanced use of a formal strategic intelligence structure in pursuit of business objectives. The exception here is major companies in Francophone regions (Germany not being far behind), which for historical reasons have been both better equipped and more knowledgeable in capitalising on strategic intelligence. Of course the rest of the world is rapidly catching up, mostly due to increased competition and development, but such formal processes are still rare to find.

The video below, which I have taken the liberty to translate from French, is an example of how one region in Belgium is promoting the importance of strategic intelligence for business success. While some might not agree with every element of ASE's interpretation of strategic intelligence, the important point is that it emphasises its broad role and importance within a company, particularly as a managerial mindset.

I have captioned the video and you will also find the full text of my translation (SRT format) below:

1
00:00:00,732 --> 00:00:04,607
Strategic Intelligence, what is it?

2
00:00:04,607 --> 00:00:06,060
For a business...

3
00:00:06,060 --> 00:00:08,701
having an effective information management system

4
00:00:08,701 --> 00:00:10,142
is a challenge similar

5
00:00:10,142 --> 00:00:13,005
to that of managing human resources...

6
00:00:13,005 --> 00:00:14,780
pricing

7
00:00:14,780 --> 00:00:17,375
or quality.

8
00:00:17,375 --> 00:00:20,369
Businesses are overloaded with sources of information...

9
00:00:20,369 --> 00:00:27,444
on clients, suppliers, staff, market competitors, social media, etc.

10
00:00:28,382 --> 00:00:32,210
Only an effective information management system

11
00:00:32,225 --> 00:00:36,070
can help businesses to face this challenge.

12
00:00:36,269 --> 00:00:38,679
This is comprised of 3 elements:

13
00:00:38,679 --> 00:00:40,594
Strategic awareness:

14
00:00:40,594 --> 00:00:43,986
Allows the gathering of relevant strategic information

15
00:00:43,986 --> 00:00:49,790
on economic, regulatory, legal and technological spheres...

16
00:00:49,790 --> 00:00:52,732
together with the detection of weak or strong signals

17
00:00:52,732 --> 00:00:55,945
on new markets or new opportunities.

18
00:00:55,945 --> 00:00:58,636
The protection and security of information:

19
00:00:58,636 --> 00:01:01,152
To maintain the integrity of information...

20
00:01:01,152 --> 00:01:05,571
one has to protect it - by securing IT networks...

21
00:01:05,571 --> 00:01:08,124
physical protection of buildings,

22
00:01:08,124 --> 00:01:11,413
but equally safeguarding production secrets.

23
00:01:11,413 --> 00:01:14,809
Intellectual property can help.

24
00:01:14,809 --> 00:01:16,375
Influence

25
00:01:16,375 --> 00:01:18,514
It's about communicating information

26
00:01:18,514 --> 00:01:22,324
on standards and behaviour that support (your) strategy

27
00:01:23,477 --> 00:01:25,561
To achieve these objectives

28
00:01:25,561 --> 00:01:27,814
influence mechanisms (must) be in place.

29
00:01:27,814 --> 00:01:29,717
Useful lobbying

30
00:01:29,717 --> 00:01:32,355
participating in the creation of international norms

31
00:01:32,355 --> 00:01:35,773
or further still, the use of social networks.

32
00:01:35,773 --> 00:01:37,170
These management tools...

33
00:01:37,170 --> 00:01:40,009
indispensable to the growth and development of SMEs

34
00:01:40,009 --> 00:01:43,044
is called strategic intelligence.

35
00:01:43,044 --> 00:01:44,608
More than a tool...

36
00:01:44,608 --> 00:01:47,407
strategic intelligence is a way of thought...

37
00:01:47,407 --> 00:01:52,006
that must be in the mind of each company manager.

38
00:01:52,006 --> 00:01:53,703
SMEs that use these tools...

39
00:01:53,703 --> 00:01:55,773
see concrete results.

40
00:01:55,773 --> 00:02:00,858
75% are able to identify opportunities and/or threats.

41
00:02:00,858 --> 00:02:05,405
80% have made changes within their companies.

42
00:02:05,405 --> 00:02:08,750
And 96% plan to do so in future.

43
00:02:08,750 --> 00:02:11,204
Aware of all these tools,

44
00:02:11,204 --> 00:02:12,944
The Agency for Economic Development

45
00:02:12,944 --> 00:02:14,291
and its personnel...

46
00:02:14,291 --> 00:02:18,260
make this more accessible for each company in Wallonia.
